When we purchased our house 3 years ago, we had no idea what our...er...my style was. All we knew was that we could not wait to get in there and start the DIY process. We got our rollers, paint brushes, team of friends we had bribed with beverages (for after the completion of painting of course!) and got to work.
When we purchased our paint, we simply went off of what looked nice on the swatch, never even considering how it may look on the walls of our home.
Long story short, after the entire house had been painted, I stood back, took a long look and decided I really didn't like anything I had chosen. My husband on the other hand didn't necessarily dislike or like anything, being that he does not really care much in interior design or style. So long as there is a place for him to sit and plant his feet somewhere, he is happy. This works to my advantage and disadvantage.....He lets me have full range of the house and design choices, but, if I do not like the end result, he would rather us live with it since we put the work into it. His perspective is, why repaint a perfectly painted wall?
The creamy yellow color, also called AfterGlow which we put on our living room, dining, and hallway walls, was a bit to loud for the space. It gave off an orangy hugh, which made the space scream old classic country look. Not the look I wanted to achieve. Mind you, it was paired with an old vintage desk which I had refinished in a powder blue to use as a council table, and another blue end table. Orangy hugh with blue accents? No thank you.
I ended up living with the original colors for about a year. I knew Jack was not about to let me go and purchase all new paint for the walls we had just painted.
And here is an old photo...

It wasn't until we built the large picture shelf for behind the couch that he let me change out the color. My reasoning? "Hun, I should probably paint the living room before we hang the shelf, or it will be a huge task to do it in the future. Painting around and in the shelf will be hard." That gave me the go ahead and I got right to work changing the dining, living and hallway colors. This time I took my time, tested colors, I even included Jack in the final choosing....with colors I had already approved.....

Live and Learn.
I went with a natural tone, also known a Valspar's "Milestone" because I wanted the decor I brought in to be the star. Also, our space is not very large, so a powerful color I felt would be too heavy.
In the end, Jack and I were both very pleased.
Has anyone here ever made some major bad color choices? Did you live with it for a while or fix it immediately? Do share! :-)

I'm here by way of the Writer's Workshop, but I've really enjoyed looking over your blog. Your room here looks so nice!
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to this too! I picked out a lovely shade of yellow from the millions of paper swatches at Home Depot. Hubby painted the entire family room before I saw it on the wall... You know neon yellow hi-lighters? Yeah, that was our wall! LOL It had to be fixed immediately!
